Pep is great but still far behind the great Ferguson

The achievements Sir Alex Ferguson created at Manchester United are still bold in Premier League history, despite the success of Pep Guardiola with Manchester City.

Manchester City could win another Premier League title this weekend, if they beat Chelsea in the Premier League. It will be a continuation of City’s dominance, which are aiming to win their fifth Premier League title in the past six seasons.

Pep’s era of success is comparable to that of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United , but he still has a long way to go if he is to reach the level of the legendary former Scotland manager.

The 81-year-old Ferguson retired in May 2013, but he still holds a series of respectable records. Mirror has compiled a list of Ferguson’s records that Ferguson can aim for.

1. Number of Premier League titles

Pep is close to a fifth title after just his seventh season in the Premier League. The Spanish strategist will have to stay with Man City for a long time if he wants to touch Ferguson’s achievements.

Ferguson won 13 Premier League titles.

13 – Alex Ferguson

4 – Pep Guardiola

3 – Arsène Wenger

3 – Jose Mourinho

1 – Jurgen Klopp, Antonio Conte, Claudio Ranieri, Manuel Pellegrini, Roberto Mancini, Carlo Ancelotti, Sir Kenny Dalglish

2. Number of wins in Premier League

Not surprisingly, Ferguson also topped the list. The Scottish strategist has led 810 Premier League games as Man Utd manager. Accordingly, he won 528, drew 168 and lost 114.

In contrast, Guardiola won 196 wins in 263 games in charge.

528 – Alex Ferguson

476 – Arsène Wenger

254 – David Moyes

236 – Harry Redknapp

217 – Jose Mourinho

3. Number of consecutive Premier League titles

Ferguson is the only manager to win the Premier League for three consecutive seasons. He did it twice, from 1998/99 to 2000/01 and 2006/07 to 2008/09.

Pep won 2 consecutive Premier Leagues 2017/18 and 2018/19 before being disrupted by Liverpool. However, the former Barcelona coach is about to establish a series of 3 consecutive seasons winning the Premier League , from 2019/20 to 2022/23.

Pep is aiming for the first time to have 3 consecutive seasons winning the Premier League.

4. Number of home wins

Ferguson has won 528 Premier League games and 305 of them have come at Old Trafford. That’s more than twice as much as any other manager has won at a stadium in Premier League history.

5. Number of away wins

Ferguson has 223 away wins, more than Jose Mourinho’s total in the Premier League. This shows Ferguson’s stability in the highest playing field in the foggy country.

6. Number of upstream wins

The legendary coach with Man Utd experienced 71 comebacks against opponents in the Premier League. Pep is nowhere near that number, with his Man City often preferring to take the lead.

7. Biggest win

The Reds’ 9-0 win over Ipswich in March 1995 was a Premier League record result. It was not until the 2019/20 season, or after 25 years, that the score was 9-0 in the Premier League when Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City crushed Southampton. A season later, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man Utd also destroyed Southampton with the same score.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool also hold this record with a 9-0 win over Bournemouth this season.

Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich, 1994/95

Southampton 0-9 Leicester City, 2019/20

MU 9-0 Southampton, 2020/21

Liverpool 9-0 Crystal Palace , 2022/23

8. Number of times won the best coach award of the month

Ferguson also leads in this category. Only Arsene Wenger, who spent 22 years at Arsenal, has come close to the number of times Ferguson’s manager of the month award.

Ferguson has led Manchester United for 26 years.

27 – Ferguson

15 – Wenger

11 – Guardiola

10 – Moyes

9 – Klopp

Similarly, Ferguson has no competition for the manager of the season award: Ferguson (11), Guardiola, Mourinho, Wenger (3) and Klopp (2).
