Mourinho is banned from directing for 10 days, counting from the time Serie A 2023/24 starts. The Portuguese coach will miss one or two matches of Roma’s first Serie A season, and must pay a fine of 50,000 euros for criticizing referee Daniele Chiffi.

After the Monza draw, the former Chelsea and MU coach said: ” This is the worst referee I’ve ever seen in my career. Believe me, I’ve met a lot of bad referees before. Usually when I talk about weights. talent, it’s because they have a direct influence on the game. In this case, I don’t think he made the right decision .”

Mourinho was angry after referee Chiffi showed a red card to Mahmet Celik in the 90+5 minute. This match, Roma fell to victory in a one-goal lead, so Mourinho lost his temper, leading to criticism of the referee. The Monza draw is also part of Roma’s seven-match winless streak at the end of the season, leading to them falling out of the top four and losing their place in next season’s Champions League.

” They say we never win when referee Daniele Orsato takes the whistle. However, I would rather have Orsato on the pitch because he knows how to control, stay calm instead of angry. Chiffi doesn’t have that. I attended this match (against Monza – PV) with a microphone recording everything from the dressing room to my return. I had to protect myself,” added the Portuguese coach. The microphone helped Roma have enough evidence to defend Mourinho against the accusations from the tournament organizers later.

Before receiving the punishment of the Serie A organizers, Mourinho was also banned by the European Football Federation (UEFA) for 4 matches for insulting referee Anthony Taylor after the Europa League final 2022/23. The ban will take effect in matches under the UEFA system starting from the 2023/24 season. This means that the “Special One” will miss four of Roma’s six matches in the Europa League group stage next season.
