Luke Shaw was penalized by the referee for handball from a corner kick in the last minute of injury time. In the next penalty spot, Mac Allister made no mistake to beat De Gea and bring 3 points to Brighton.
After the game, Luke Shaw apologized for his confusing handling situation.
“Last minute, last ball. I was nudged but of course my hand shouldn’t be there. I was the one who made the mistake and this ball cost us a defeat.
I can’t explain why my hand is there. But right before the corner, that free kick is never a foul. I’m not looking for excuses, but it’s definitely not a foul that leads to a corner. So the corner should not have appeared. I don’t blame the referee or anything. My hand went up, a stupid mistake cost us a point.”
After the game, coach Ten Hag also commented on this situation: “This is a handball, maybe he lost his balance or was pushed from behind. My anger is more towards the free kick before the corner. It was never a penalty.”
